  • In 1866, Congress allowed the Army to raise 6 regiments of African-American soldiers.  Before then, no African-American soldiers had been allowed to serve in the U.S. army.  After the war, when these same regiments saw action against Native Americans, they adopted the term "Buffalo Soldiers" taken from the Native American's nickname for them.
  • Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play Major League Baseball.  He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
