According to our policy on library cards and borrowing:

"A total of fifty items may be checked out per card.

So only 50 total items, in whatever combination, may be checked out at one time on any one card.

The part that confused you is the next sentence:

"There is no specific limit on the number of books and magazines."

But this is meant to be in comparison to the specific limits placed on A/V and specialty items.  The policy follows:

"The limit on audio books is 10.  The limit on music CDs is 10.  The limit on CD-ROMS is 5."
