Probably the best book to start with is Writer's Market.  This title lists book publishers in the US, Canada and internationally, and includes small presses.  Each listing will tell you:

  • subjects published
  • imprints
  • how many titles published annually
  • contacts
  • royalty rates

Writer's Market also provides you with information on how to approach publishers and gives tips on writing query letters and formatting your manuscript for submission.

Literary Marketplace is another good title.  Like Writer's Market, it will tell you about the publishers, but it also provides extensive book trade information: literary agents, public relations, manufacturers, reviewers, prepress services and more.

The current edition of both titles is available at the Reference Desk at most branches.
